GETTING AROUND...

The historic center of San Miguel encompasses 24 blocks of narrow streets, alleys, and paths without any traffic lights. The best way to explore the city is on foot, wandering through the narrow streets and alleys to discover all the treasures of San Miguel.  We would not recommend renting a car while in San Miguel de Allende as parking is scarce. The city is easily walkable, but if you need a break or want to explore something outside of the city, below are some other options for transportation.

Taxi Cabs

Taxis are incredibly cheap, safe and plentiful throughout San Miguel!  If you find yourself in need of a ride, taxis are your best bet.  We encourage guests to use taxis instead of renting a car to drive.  Parking in San Miguel is very limited, and the roads are typically narrow, cobblestoned, and difficult to navigate. Plus, the driving style of Miguelitos can be…um…creative, at best! Unless you have experience driving in Mexico, we suggest that you stick to taxis or your own two feet! Expect to spend approximately 30 pesos ($2 US) for an average ride during the day.

Here is the contact info for a couple of local taxi companies:
  • Servi Taxi Celaya: +52 461 617 4300
  • Radio Taxis San Miguelito: +52 415 152 0124

  • San Miguel taxis do not have meters. Negotiate your rate before entering the car.
  • If you call a cab from “home” or a restaurant, expect to pay at least 20 extra pesos, possibly more.
  • Drivers do not expect a tip.
  • Fares will be slightly higher at night.
  • Taxis can be safely hailed on the street or at the taxi stands near the Plaza Principal. Look for the green/white livery on the cabs.
  • Very few drivers carry change. Be sure to keep a stash of small bills.
  • San Miguel recently implemented a “Safe Taxi” (Taxi Seguro) program, with certified drivers. Look for the “Taxi Seguro” sticker if you wish to use these taxis.
  • Drivers can often be hired at a daily rate if you wish to visit outlying sites. Just negotiate with the drivers or call one of the recommended taxi companies.
